From Dailies To Oscar Nominations

Oscar-nominated editors discussed the art of editing Saturday, March 1, 2014 at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, Ca. The event began sharply at 10:30am, after editors, students, the media, and other guest stood in line patiently for hours. It was another grand event held at The Egyptian Theatre, which always make my trip to The Oscars worth while. The Guilds create a behind the scenes platform for those of us that only get to see the end results on the big screen.

This years event was moderated by Stephen Rivkin, A.C.E., who currently serves as the ACE Vice President and on the board of directors for the Motion Picture Editors Guild. He founded the Committee for Creative Recognition and EditorsPetition.com to petition film festivals and critics organizations to add the category of Film Editing to their annual awards presentations.He was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA  Award and an ACE Eddie for his work on the mega-blockbuster Avatar which he co-edited. He also co-edited the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy for Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, which were all nominated for ACE Eddie Awards, with a win for the original summer hit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Rivkin worked with director Norman Jewison on four films: The Hurricane, for which Denzel Washington received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award, The Statement starring Michael Caine, Bogus starring Whoopi Goldberg, and Only ouu starring Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. He also worked as co-editor on the Michael Mann film Ali for which Will Smith received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and the popular films Nine Months, Outbreak, My Cousin Vinny, Band of the Hand and Fire in the Sky. Other credits include: Stealth, Swordfish, Idle Hands, Excess Baggage, Robin Hood, Men in Tights for director Mel Brooks, Bat-21, and Hot ?Dog: The Movie. Rivkin edited and was associate producer on the features Youngblood and the Personals. Among Rivkin's television credits are TNT's CableAce Award-nominated Nightbreaker; HBO's The Comrades of Summer and El Diablo, as well as Lifetime's Wildflower and the CBS movie The Girl with the Crazy Brother, both directed by Diane Keaton.
